From Within

From Within is a program that tries to create music through heartbeats.

In this week-long project at CIID, I explored how sound works in the library p5.js . It was a general exploration of how to make sounds, record and play samples, and just have a lot of fun creating noises. The goal of this project was to create a simple synthesizer that could be played in a stage performance. This project was more of a way to structure my learning and have fun.

How was it made?

The program is provided with heartbeat input through a stethoscope, that is connected to a mic input. After setting an amplitude threshold for the input beats, the program then calculates the number of heartbeats per minute. This heartbeat rate is calculated every 5 seconds.

The system is programmed to play a higher or a lower chord of a recorded audio piece, depending on whether the heartbeat rate increases or decreases. This interactive audio program was created using p5.js.

This was an individual project done as part of a week-long Introduction to Programming course at CIID.
